Wayland police warn residents after black bear spotted in neighborhood

WAYLAND — A black bear roaming a town neighborhood drew a police advisory on Saturday, the day's most-discussed local story, as community theater and senior programming dominated an otherwise quiet news cycle with no fresh items from Town Hall or the school district.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

Beatrice Herford's Vokes Players are deep into the run of "Jesus Christ Superstar," the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera directed by Jennifer Gasser with music direction by Shane Stecher. The production, which opened May 1 and closes May 16, is sold out, according to the Vokes Players' website.

Vokes also confirmed details for a special June production tied to the nation's 250th anniversary. In partnership with the Wayland 250 Committee and the Wayland High School theater department, the company will stage a concert version of Peter Stone and Stuart Ostrow's "1776 the Musical" at Wayland High School on June 12 and June 13 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is produced outside Vokes' regular season.

The Wayland Council on Aging has posted its May 2026 newsletter on the town's COA page and reminded residents the Community Center at 8 Andrew Ave. will be closed May 19 and May 25. COA Director Julie Secord's staff can be reached at 508-358-2990.
