Wayland HRDEI Committee Pauses Cultural Heritage Statements, Explores Newspaper Partnership
WAYLAND — June 16, 2026 — Wayland's Human Rights, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee voted to retain all current officers and debated ending its practice of issuing monthly cultural heritage statements at its June 16 meeting. The committee unanimously re-elected Karen Blumenfeld as chair, Heather Pino as vice chair, and Sophie Chen as clerk, and seated three newly appointed voting members: Hernan Murdoch, Ken Bruss, and student member Kyle Davidson, who was absent. The panel reached informal consensus — without a formal vote — to write no new heritage statements while keeping its existing archive of roughly 14 on the website, and to contact The Wayland Post about hosting a community education feature as an alternative. Blumenfeld framed the concern bluntly: "If the statements are very, very similar from month to month, there's a risk of missing someone or leaving someone out — it's just kind of on the one hand, meaningless and on the other hand, risky." The committee also discussed fall programming with facilitators Dr. Eden Renee Hayes and Jamal Adams, working within a previously authorized budget of up to $8,000.
