Woburn School Committee Tables $205,000 Budget Cut, Eyes Facilities Position
WOBURN — June 9, 2026 — Woburn School Committee tables a $205,000 budget cut decision, delaying a vote on whether to eliminate a proposed assistant facilities director position. The city council passed the school department's fiscal year 2027 budget the night before at a figure $205,000 below what the committee had approved, prompting Finance Director Alex Dizio to present four cost-cutting scenarios, with scenario one — eliminating the $130,000 assistant facilities director post and trimming homeless transportation and electricity budgets — drawing the most support. Chair Lisa Chisholm warned against overloading Facilities Director Lenny Burnham, noting the position "has been asked for for about three different directors in my time," while Vice Chair Kathleen Crowley cited a Shamrock roof project, fire station work, and a new school feasibility study as reasons not to cut the role. The committee voted unanimously to table the decision to its June 24 meeting. In other action, the board unanimously adopted eight updated school policies, including a biannual school improvement plan schedule, and Superintendent Kathleen Crowley announced that interim Technology Director Kim Miles had accepted the permanent director position.
