Wayland250 schedules May and June events for America's 250th anniversary
WAYLAND — The Wayland250 Working Group on Wednesday announced a slate of community events through May and June timed to America's 250th anniversary, the marquee item in a quiet town news cycle that also brought a fresh Council on Aging newsletter and finalized plans for a concert staging of "1776" at Wayland High School next month.
TOWN HALL
The Wayland250 Working Group — a mix of volunteers and town staff — said it will host a series of community events celebrating the country's semi-quincentennial. The announcement, posted Wednesday to the town's News Flash, frames the programming as a multi-week run rather than a single anniversary event, and dovetails with separate semi-quincentennial programming from the Wayland Museum & Historical Society and the Vokes Players.
The Council on Aging's June newsletter is now available through the town website. Director Julie Secord's department continues to publish the monthly bulletin as its primary calendar for programs, services and trips out of the Community Center at 8 Andrew Ave.
Carried over from the day before, the town and the Wayland Police Department issued a joint statement Tuesday on the March attack on a synagogue in Michigan, posted to the town's News Flash page.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The Vokes Players, in partnership with the Wayland250 Committee and the Wayland High School theater department, will present a concert version of Peter Stone and Stuart Ostrow's "1776" on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Wayland High School. The concert is being produced outside the troupe's regular season as part of the town's anniversary programming. Vokes' summer mainstage, Joe DiPietro's "Over the River and Through the Woods," directed by David Berti, runs July 24 through Aug. 8 at the Vokes Theatre on Route 20.
The Wayland Museum & Historical Society's "Tracing Liberty" series continues June 3 at 7 p.m. with a hybrid book discussion of Tilly Laskey's "Precious & Adored: Love Letters of Rose Cleveland & Evangeline Simpson Whipple, 1890–1918," at the Wayland Free Public Library and on Zoom. Laskey returns in person for an author talk on June 7 at 2 p.m. The museum's annual meeting and a program titled "Samuel Parris: Villain or Victim?" is set for June 21.
The Council on Aging is also promoting its 15th annual Summer Concert Series at the Community Center; full dates appear in the new June newsletter.
