Wayland wins $150,000 state grant to advance culvert and flood work

WAYLAND — The town has been awarded $150,000 in state money to advance culvert work aimed at reducing road flooding, according to Wayland Patch, even as Town Hall, the library and the Council on Aging prepare to close Monday for Memorial Day. The grant is the biggest single development heading into the holiday weekend.

TOWN HALL Town offices will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day, the town announced through its News Flash. Residents should plan ahead for permits, payments and other in-person business before the long weekend.

The town and Wayland Police Department also posted three community statements this week: a general statement on current national and international events, a statement responding to the recent attack on a mosque in San Diego, and a renewed "Know Your Rights" notice on immigration. The postings, all dated May 21, signal an effort by local officials to reaffirm community safety messaging amid unsettled national headlines.

COMMUNITY & ARTS The Wayland Free Public Library will be closed Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day. The Council on Aging at 8 Andrew Ave. is also closed May 25; its May newsletter is available online, and director Julie Secord's staff continues to take program registrations by phone at 508-358-2990.

The Wayland Museum & Historical Society's "Tracing Liberty" series continues May 31 at 9 a.m. with a Walk, Wonder and Discover outing at the Town Beach on Lake Cochituate, 25 Parkland Drive — part of the museum's yearlong programming tied to the nation's 250th anniversary. The next book talk in the series, on "Precious & Adored," is set for June 3 at 7 p.m. at the library and on Zoom.

The Vokes Players are turning to the same Rev250 theme next month: in partnership with the Wayland 250 Committee and the Wayland High School theater department, the company will stage a concert version of "1776" at the high school on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. The Vokes summer mainstage, Joe DiPietro's comedy "Over the River and Through the Woods," directed by David Berti, runs July 24 through Aug. 8.
