Wayland moves Memorial Day ceremony indoors as rain cancels parade

WAYLAND — The town's 2026 Memorial Day parade was canceled Monday morning because of rain, but the Ceremony of Remembrance went forward indoors at the Wayland Middle School gymnasium at 11:30 a.m. The Public Ceremonies Committee announced the weather call just before 9 a.m., hours after confirming the day's full program.

TOWN HALL

The Wayland Public Ceremonies Committee called off the parade portion of the 2026 Memorial Day Program shortly before 9 a.m. Monday, citing rain. The Ceremony of Remembrance was relocated to the Wayland Middle School gymnasium at 201 Main St. and began at 11:30 a.m., the committee said in a posting to the town's News Flash. The announcement followed the committee's earlier release of the day's program, which had been scheduled to honor Wayland's fallen service members with a march through the town center before the ceremony.

Town Hall and most municipal offices were closed for the federal holiday. The Council on Aging building at 8 Andrew Ave. was also closed Monday in observance of the day.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Wayland Museum & Historical Society's "Tracing Liberty" series resumes Sunday, May 31, with a 9 a.m. "Walk, Wonder, and Discover!" outing at the Lake Cochituate town beach, 25 Parkland Drive. The free, all-ages walk is part of the museum's yearlong slate of history talks and nature walks tied to the nation's 250th anniversary.

Vokes Players are previewing two summer offerings in Wayland Center. The community theater company is teaming with the Wayland 250 Committee and the Wayland High School theater department to present a concert version of "1776" at Wayland High School on June 12 and June 13 at 7:30 p.m. The regular summer mainstage, Joe DiPietro's family comedy "Over the River and Through the Woods," directed by David Berti, runs July 24 through Aug. 8 at the Vokes Theatre on Route 20.
