Wayland HRDEI committee approves Arab American, Jewish American heritage statements

WAYLAND — April 21, 2026 — Wayland HRDEI committee approves rewritten Arab and Jewish heritage statements, then debates ending the practice. The committee passed both the April Arab American Heritage Month and May Jewish American Heritage Month statements after extensive line edits, including removing language that paired enslavement with "resilience" and "entrepreneurial spirit" and changing "more than a century" to "centuries." Member Mariam argued the federally-tied criteria for statements risks excluding groups "most affected by systemic bias" and called the work at risk of feeling "performative." Member Yawu pushed back on repeated historical-suffering framing, asking "why do we always hate bringing that up?" Chair Karen Blumenfeld tabled the broader policy questions; Mariam, Mary Ann Ambrockowski and Yawu will draft options. The Wayland Festival is set for Oct. 3.
