Sudbury's Park and Recreation Commission advances multi-sport court and Haskell Field planning while the Select Board confirms Haskell playground safety improvements are complete.

SUDBURY -- The week of June 15–21 brought no high school athletic contests but produced notable municipal action affecting Sudbury's parks and youth sports infrastructure.

TOWN -- The Park and Recreation Commission, meeting June 15, discussed design guidance for a new multi-sport court planned as an early action item under the Haskell-Fairbank landscape master plan. Commissioners favored adding street hockey markings alongside basketball, though members noted surface durability and the distinction from full-rink construction would require further study by the project's design firm, Activitas. A splash pad adjacent to the existing playground at Haskell was floated as a longer-range possibility, with commissioners citing operational complexity as a key concern. Commissioners also expressed disappointment that two community input forums on the master plan drew almost no general public participation, and encouraged residents to watch recordings on Sudbury TV.

At the June 16 Select Board meeting, Town Manager Andy Garofalo reported that the pour-in-place rubberized surface at the Smile Playground at Haskell Field — found to be too thin during 2025 testing — was replaced by the contractor and passed a new inspection "with flying colors." The board also noted that the Camp Siwataro pond will be open to Sudbury residents 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on July 3, 4, and 5, and again August 1 and 2. A public input session on the Liberty Ridge Camp Siwataro Committee is scheduled for June 24, in person and remote.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Sudbury Youth Soccer Association reported that High School Academy Squad tryouts for rising 9th–12th graders were held June 2 and June 4; players with conflicts were directed to contact Coach Ross. Fall 2026 registration remains open for Pre-K through 2nd grade until August 1. The SYSA website also promoted a Next Play High School Prep summer program for girls entering grades 8–12, running Mondays and Wednesdays at Nashoba Brooks School in Concord through June and July.
