Select Board approves prepared statements opposing town meeting Articles 3 and 4
SUDBURY — May 20, 2026 — Sudbury Select Board approves prepared statements opposing Special Town Meeting Articles 3 and 4. Meeting in the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School gymnasium roughly half an hour before the May 20 Special Town Meeting, the board voted 5-0 to read draft statements from the floor explaining its earlier 4-1 votes against Articles 3 and 4. Chair Janie W. Dretler said she was aware of roughly seven floor amendments coming and that none had been reviewed by the board as a whole: "This hasn't been vetted, in my opinion." Members agreed to caucus on the floor on each amendment, with the option to support, oppose, or take no position. Member Daniel E. Carty said he would press town counsel on the floor to clarify that the Attorney General — not the accused body — determines Open Meeting Law violations, arguing repeated allegations against the School Committee have not been upheld. Dretler also flagged that the moderator's one-to-two-minute speaking limits conflict with the town bylaw allowing 10 minutes for presenters and five for other speakers.
