Recreation Commission declines to endorse $400,000 playground fund shift

WAYLAND — April 16, 2026 — Wayland Recreation Commission withholds endorsement of $400,000 CPA fund shift tied to preschool move. Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to authorize Recreation Director Leslie Rebecchi to deliver their concerns — but not an endorsement — to the Community Preservation Committee, which is weighing whether to amend 2025 Town Meeting Article 16 so the previously approved $400,000 can be spent at Happy Hollow School instead of the Town Building playground. The shift is driven by the school department's decision to relocate The Children's Way preschool, whose 2-to-5-year-olds cannot use Happy Hollow's existing 5-to-12-rated playground. Superintendent Dr. Parry Graham said the consolidation will save "over a quarter of a million dollars a year" in staffing. Members pushed back on the compressed timeline, the lack of a conceptual design, and the prospect of expanding the town inventory from 12 to 13 playgrounds before the May 4 Town Meeting.
