Natick High School's Unified track and field team earned recognition for its fourth consecutive state championship title.
NATICK -- The Natick School Committee opened its June 15 meeting by recognizing the Natick High School Unified track and field program, which has won the state championship four consecutive years. Program coordinator Nick D'Antonio addressed the committee alongside members of the team, noting that roughly 80 to 90 students apply each year to serve as partners in the program, which brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities.
"I always say it's not segmented by disability, but rather by ability," D'Antonio said. "In some of our events, we have students with intellectual disabilities competing against, and in many cases beating, some students without intellectual disabilities."
D'Antonio also noted that Natick High School hosts the MIAA Unified state tournament annually and highlighted the Unified Polar Plunge, held each March, which raised more than $16,000 for Special Olympics Massachusetts last year. He said planners are aiming to surpass 120 jumpers at the next event.
