Drought Escalates to Critical as Sudbury Urges Conservation and Opens Cooling Centers
The Northeast region has worsened to critical drought status — the most severe tier — and Sudbury's Conservation Commission is strongly urging residents to cut water use immediately, even as a heat wave moves in and the town opens cooling centers this week.
TOWN HALL
Sudbury's Conservation Commission posted a formal notice Thursday warning that declining rainfall and falling streamflow have pushed the Northeast into critical drought. Residents are asked to reduce outdoor irrigation, limit non-essential water use, and conserve where possible as dry conditions are expected to continue into summer.
Also tonight, the town held its Landscape Master Plan Workshop beginning at 6:30 p.m. — a hybrid session at the Fairbank Community Center and via Zoom — giving residents a chance to shape priorities for the town's parks and open spaces.
The Health Department has scheduled residential mosquito control spraying for the evenings of June 15 and 16. The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project will deploy truck-mounted aerosol sprayers between sunset and 11:30 p.m. each night.
Starting June 22, Town Hall and the Flynn Building will close on Fridays through September 4 for the annual summer schedule. Separately, Town Manager Andy Sheehan will hold open office hours for residents on Wednesday, September 16 — dates and location to be confirmed through the town's site.
SCHOOLS
The Sudbury Public Schools School Committee has posted its meeting notice and agenda for Monday, June 15, with the session running from 7 to 10 p.m. The agenda posting signals the final stretch of the school year: the district's general last day is Thursday, June 18, an early-release day, followed by Juneteenth on June 19 with no school. Israel Loring Elementary School holds its own last day on Monday, June 22, and the district's final day (day 185) is Tuesday, June 23.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
Residents with broken household items — small electronics, clothing, or jewelry — can bring them to the Sudbury Fixit Clinic at Goodnow Library on Saturday, June 13. The free community repair event is listed through the Sudbury Public Schools community notices channel.
HOPEsudbury's Annual Backpack Drive is accepting client registrations through June 26. Families who need school-supply support for the coming year are encouraged to sign up now.
The Sudbury Senior Center has shifted to summer hours through September 30: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to noon. Residents interested in summer fitness classes should plan ahead — registration for the Summer I fitness session opens June 29 for Sudbury residents (June 30 for non-residents), with classes beginning the week of July 6.
