Boys volleyball sweeps three, including two five-set road wins

WAYLAND — Wayland boys volleyball ripped off three straight wins, two of them on the road and in three-set thrillers, to headline a busy week that also saw the girls lacrosse team push its winning streak forward and the Town Beach open for the season Saturday.

TOWN

The Recreation Department opened Town Beach for the season Saturday, May 23, alongside continued spring/summer program registration through the ActivityReg portal. Recreation Director Katherine Brenna's office is also circulating a new field user packet for permit holders, with all town fields listed as open for the season.

Of the three town committees that met this week, none of the discussions touched athletics directly. The Energy and Climate Committee focused on grant applications for school HVAC work, the Select Board took public comment on a Dudley Chateau liquor amendment and the Personnel Board handled firefighter vacation carryover. No Recreation Commission business surfaced in the period.

HIGH SCHOOL

Boys varsity volleyball delivered the week's signature run, beating Acton-Boxborough 3-1 at home Monday, then surviving back-to-back five-set road tests at Needham (3-2) on Wednesday and Newton North (3-2) on Thursday. The Warriors closed the week 3-0 against three Dual County and Bay State opponents heading into the postseason window.

Girls varsity lacrosse stayed hot, dispatching Woburn Memorial 15-7 at home Monday before traveling to Newton South and winning 17-8 on Wednesday. The two-game sweep continued the team's strongest stretch of the spring.

Varsity softball produced the week's wildest swings. After a 15-0 loss at Bedford on Monday, the Warriors edged Shawsheen Valley Tech 6-5 on Wednesday, fell 10-2 to Holliston on Thursday, then bused to Lynn Classical Saturday and hammered the hosts twice, 20-8 and 16-5, in a doubleheader at Breed Middle School.

Varsity baseball split, dropping a 6-3 decision at Westborough on Wednesday before bouncing back with a 6-1 road win at rival Weston on Friday night. The boys lacrosse team had a tougher week on Wayland's Stadium Field, losing 13-7 to Newton South and 15-4 to Natick. Boys tennis fell 4-1 at Lincoln-Sudbury on Monday; girls tennis dropped two of their own 4-1, to Boston Latin and Lincoln-Sudbury.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

No middle school athletics news appeared in the available sources this week.

YOUTH

Wayland Youth Soccer announced that its 7-8th grade boys Strikers team has qualified for the Mass Youth Soccer Massachusetts Tournament of Champions, the spring season's biggest in-state youth honor. WAYS also opened sign-ups for incoming sixth-grade and incoming seventh- and eighth-grade player evaluations, and continued to push spring 2026 registration and its referee certification program. The league flagged Referee Appreciation Weekend on May 16-17 and reminded families of the BAYS Respect Campaign.

Wayland Little League noted that spring registration is closed, with summer sign-ups now live through its SportsEngine portal. The league also confirmed the Eliza J. Norton Foundation's Build with Heart dugout project at Cochituate Park is complete; WLL was a Champion Sponsor of the build. Filterable 2026 schedules by division, team and field are posted on the league site.

Wayland Youth Basketball, Wayland Youth Lacrosse and the Wayland Youth Sports portal had no new bulletins for the period.

SENIOR

The Council on Aging's May newsletter and ongoing fitness schedule remain posted, but no new senior sports or pickleball programming was announced this week. The COA was closed Tuesday, May 19, and will be closed again Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day.

LOOKING AHEAD

With MIAA tournament seedings approaching, the boys volleyball team's three-win week and the girls lacrosse winning streak position both programs to chase home draws in the opening round. Watch the WHS Athletics schedules page for tournament brackets, and Town Beach passes are on sale through the Recreation Department's online portal.
