Billerica 250th Committee votes to bury time capsule, seal it until 2076

BILLERICA — May 13, 2026 — Billerica's 250th Anniversary Committee voted to create a time capsule sealed until the town's 300th anniversary in 2076. The committee unanimously approved burying the capsule — to be fabricated by local metalworker Mike Rosa — near the Liberty Tree, pending Select Board approval of a burial site, and voted to begin soliciting public submissions via Facebook, with all items subject to committee review. Members proposed contents including the current high school yearbook, a Market Basket grocery receipt, town warrant copies, and a signed committee T-shirt from the July 2 event. On the July 2 festival, food vendor Augustus confirmed three trailers for the celebration targeting seven to ten thousand attendees, and Richie's Slush Bus is also locked in, though a pizza vendor and a Revolutionary War cannon demonstration remain unresolved. The committee approved up to $1,000 for food at Sunday's vintage baseball game and set a June 1 cutoff for cash calendar raffle sales, with raffle agent Yankee Doodle having already donated $454 to the committee. Chair Robert disclosed a potential major sponsorship from Stoneham Bank, with details expected at the next meeting.
