Wayland250 unveils spring slate of semiquincentennial community events

WAYLAND — The Wayland250 Working Group announced a run of community events marking America's 250th anniversary in May and June, the town's most prominent civic push of the week alongside a fresh Council on Aging newsletter and a new museum lecture series tied to the same milestone.

TOWN HALL

The Wayland250 Working Group, made up of volunteers and town staff, will host a series of public events through the spring marking the nation's semiquincentennial, the town announced Wednesday on its News Flash. The lineup pulls together history programs, outdoor walks and family-friendly activities staged in partnership with the library, the museum and the Council on Aging. Wayland Patch also rounded up the schedule in a separate write-up (see below).

The Council on Aging's June newsletter is now posted on the town site, with the monthly calendar of programs, fitness classes and outreach offerings led by Director Julie Secord and her staff at 8 Andrew Avenue.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

Vokes Players will stage a concert version of "1776" at Wayland High School on June 12 and June 13 at 7:30 p.m., produced jointly with the Wayland250 Committee and the Wayland High School theater department as part of the town's semiquincentennial programming. The community theater's summer mainstage, Joe DiPietro's "Over the River and Through the Woods," follows July 24 through Aug. 8 at the Vokes Theatre on Route 20, directed by David Berti.

The Wayland Museum & Historical Society's "Tracing Liberty" series continues June 3 at 7 p.m. with a discussion of Tilly Laskey's "Precious & Adored: Love Letters of Rose Cleveland & Evangeline Simpson Whipple, 1890–1918," held in person at the Wayland Free Public Library and on Zoom. Laskey returns for an in-person author talk on June 7 at 2 p.m. The next Walk, Wonder, and Discover outing is set for May 31 at 9 a.m. at the Town Beach on Lake Cochituate, 25 Parkland Drive. The museum is also pointing residents to its annual meeting and "Samuel Parris: Villain or Victim?" program on June 21.

The Council on Aging is promoting its 15th Annual Summer Concert Series at the Community Center, with details in the new June newsletter.
