Wayland Historic District Commission unanimously approves barn certificate at 30 Cochituate Road

WAYLAND — June 2, 2026 — Wayland's Historic District Commission approved a barn construction certificate and discussed stalled town-center parking planning at its June 2 meeting. The commission voted unanimously to issue a certificate of appropriateness to Bryan and Mary Farley for a 24-by-38-foot, 22-foot-tall post-and-beam barn at 30 Cochituate Road, to be built by Connecticut-based Country Carpenters and finished in deep barn-red stain or paint with hand-forged black iron hardware. The certificate includes four built-in options — transom lights or none, louvered or windowed cupola, stain or paint, and an optional hay hoist — sparing the applicants a return visit for those details. Vice Chair Margery F. Baston also reported that the commission's previously approved parking memo had been taken up at a Select Board meeting the prior evening, with Select Board Chair Carol delegating next steps to Town Manager Michael McCall, who has been asked to convene a collaborative meeting of the Historic District Commission, the Historical Society, the library, and the new town center property owner. Baston noted the Select Board chair confirmed "there isn't money for it right now in the budget" for a professional parking study, and members raised DCR and MassDOT grants tied to the planned rail trail extension as potential funding avenues.
