Historical Commission finalizes Dudley Woods, Castle Gate sign edits
WAYLAND — March 25, 2026 — Wayland Historical Commission locks in final sign edits as rail trail contract heads back to bid. Meeting March 25 under Temporary Chair Sherry Anne Bryant, commissioners agreed to strip the word "castle" from the Castle Gate Pillars sign after member Tonya Largy's research in deeds, plot plans and period newspapers found no evidence the Simpson estate was ever called that — "it's always been called the mansion inn or the mansion," Largy said. The panel also added Wayland Historical Commission credits to all three signs at R. Richard Conard's request, corrected photo credits to "Wayland Museum & Historical Society," and asked designer Carol to enlarge Michael Simpson's portrait and add a QR code. Conard reported the rail trail sign contract must be rebid by Assistant Town Manager Kelsi Power-Spirlet because the original vendor can no longer honor its prices. Resident Alison Weber used public comment to flag neighborhood concerns about Article 16's $200,000 Orchard Lane study. Adjournment passed 5-0.
