Historic Districts Commission sends police station solar canopy designs back for revisions

SUDBURY — June 4, 2026 — Sudbury HDC rejects three solar canopy options for police station, demands more architectural design. The Historic Districts Commission on June 4 voted unanimously to continue the 775 Hudson Road solar canopy case to Aug. 6, telling combined facilities director Sandra Duran and Select Energy's Byron Woodman that the three proposed product families — Solar Mounts, INBARC and Parasol — were "not particularly attractive or interesting," in Chair Anuraj Shah's words. Vice Chair Taryn Trexler pulled up Lexington police station canopy submittals mid-meeting as a reference, and member Christopher Hagger urged the team to catalog canopies in other historic districts before settling on a manufacturer. Woodman reported utility approval, SMART incentive confirmation, panels safe-harbored for the 30 percent federal tax credit, and a signed power purchase agreement. The commission also approved a Peakham Road window-and-siding package 3-0 with Shah abstaining, told a Rutledge Properties sign at 353 Boston Post Road to come back at 2 feet by 6 feet 4 inches, and unanimously approved a red-white-and-blue Benjamin Moore paint scheme for an 1828 house at 18 Hudson Road in honor of the 250th anniversary.
