Cambridge Hits Level 3 Critical Drought; City Opens 106 Affordable Homes at New Street
The state has elevated Cambridge and the broader Northeast region to Level 3 Critical Drought — the most severe designation short of an emergency declaration — even as the city marks a packed 24 hours with a ribbon-cutting on 106 new affordable homes and a full slate of Juneteenth programming beginning Thursday evening.
TOWN HALL
The drought designation jumped from Level 2 (Significant) to Level 3 (Critical), meaning Cambridge joins much of the region under heightened water-stress conditions. Residents and businesses should expect guidance from the city on conservation measures as the situation is monitored heading into summer heat.
City leaders and nonprofit partner Just A Start held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 52 New Street to celebrate the opening of 106 new affordable homes — one of the larger single additions to the city's affordable housing stock in recent years.
The License Commission, acting on City Manager recommendations, has authorized seasonal alcohol-to-go sales for permitted businesses within designated public consumption zones, along with a maximum one-hour extension of operating hours for qualifying establishments, a package designed to support local business this summer.
Cambridge Arts is also accepting applications from artists to design Cool Spot shade structures — temporary, site-responsive installations that provide heat relief and double as public gathering spaces. Selected artists can receive up to $95,000 in project support.
Eight board and commission vacancies are open for community applicants, including seats on the American Freedmen Commission, Cambridge Climate Committee, LGBTQ+ Commission, and the Commission for Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board, among others.
Residents should also note ongoing traffic impacts through Saturday, June 21, tied to several scheduled community events including the B.A.A. 10K.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The city and community partners are celebrating Juneteenth with a parade and music celebration on Friday, June 19. All Cambridge Public Library branches will be closed that day in observance of the holiday.
The library has launched its 2026 Summer Reading Bingo program, themed "Plant a Seed, Read!" The official summer kickoff is Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. in Joan Lorentz Park outside the Main Library, featuring a free outdoor concert with GRAMMY-nominated folk musician Alastair Moock. Attendees can pick up bingo boards, register for summer reading, and receive a tiny blossom kit; ice cream will be available while supplies last. The Department of Public Works, Community Gardens, and Office of Sustainability will join the celebration.
The city and the Central Square BID have also unveiled plans for the 2026 Cambridge Dance Party, themed "The World Dances Here" — a nod to the region's role hosting seven FIFA World Cup matches this summer.
